## The idea

Boorstin runs through some three thousand years of artistic and intellectual invention through the lives of those who made it, from Homer to Virginia Woolf. His thread is continuity: art, architecture and philosophy are born inside a specific society, reflect it and at the same time found the tradition the next generation will work with. Creation thus appears as a practice with a history, not as a succession of isolated sparks.

## Why it matters to us

What we take from the book is a way of looking at the work. Those who created did so for an audience and for a result, with the expressive means of their time and frequently ahead of them. It is the demand we recognise in what we build: understanding who a system is addressed to, what it has to achieve and in which language — text, voice, video, interface, code — it can be said today.

## What we question

The book is built on biographies, and a biography tends to concentrate in one person what was produced by a workshop, a commission, an available technique and a city. We almost always work in the opposite direction: distributing responsibility across people, disciplines and systems. The history of the creators illuminates ambition and explains less well how a collective result is sustained.

## What changed

It has helped us separate two conversations we used to mix: what we want to build, and who it is being built for. We now start the second one earlier. It has also made us more explicit when talking about adaptation: anticipating a change of context is a design decision worth arguing with evidence, not an intuition that defends itself.

## What it connects to

It connects to How we think — asking, building in order to learn and unlearning when reality changes — to Building together, to generative and multimodal reporting, where one and the same informational base has to be composed for different audiences, and to Excorpora, which studies what is preserved when a meaning changes context.
